Chronic Steroid Use Does Not Increase Morbidity After Distal Pancreatectomy

Chronic steroid use does not impact short-term complications or mortality in patients undergoing distal pancreatectomy.

  • In a study of 6,876 patients, chronic steroid users (623 patients) showed no significant differences in major complications (31.7% vs 30.1%), minor complications (42.2% vs 41.6%), or mortality (3.4% vs 3.2%) compared to non-steroid users after propensity matching.
  • Chronic steroid use should not be viewed as a contraindication to undergoing distal pancreatectomy.

Limitations include the inability to analyze dose-response relationships, so these findings should be interpreted with caution.
