ICG may help difficult gallbladder surgery

In emergency gallbladder surgery, indocyanine green fluorescence was linked to a smaller rise in operating time as inflammation increased; fewer conversions in the most inflamed patients remain unproven.

  • The prospective cohort included 221 patients having emergency laparoscopic gallbladder removal.
  • Conversions occurred only with standard imaging; in patients with the highest C-reactive protein levels, fluorescence was linked to an estimated 15-point reduction.

The conversion difference was not statistically reliable, and patients were not randomly assigned. The operating-time finding supports testing whether C-reactive protein can help target fluorescence use.
