Surgeons want to lead space surgery

Members of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons want a say in how surgery will work beyond Earth, and robotics tops their list.

  • Most respondents were attending minimally invasive or general surgeons.
  • Robotic technology in space drew the strongest interest.
  • Members asked for skills workshops and astronaut talks at future annual meetings.

Only 6.1% of members responded, so this reflects a self-selected few, not the whole society. It maps interests and gaps, not how space surgery should be done.
