Robot motion data predicts surgeon experience

Motion data from robotic gallbladder dissection identified surgeon experience about as well as motion data combined with clinical details.

  • Motion data alone scored 0.97 out of 1.0 for separating attending surgeons from trainees.
  • For predicting outcomes, combining both sources scored 0.75, against 0.72 for either source alone.

Clinical details alone did worse at spotting experience, so the motion data adds something new. The outcome gain is small. This was a look back at 234 recorded dissections, so it shows links, not proof that the data would guide decisions in the operating room.
