Induction chemotherapy followed by response evaluation and esophagectomy in patients with advanced esophageal cancer showed promising results in terms of survival. A total of 238 patients were treated with taxane/platinum-based chemotherapy, with 64.7% undergoing surgical exploration. Resection was performed in 53.4% of patients, resulting in a median survival of 26.3 months and a 5-year overall survival rate of approximately 30%. The presence of t4b and poorly differentiated tumors was associated with worse survival. Induction chemotherapy followed by esophagectomy may be a feasible curative treatment option for carefully selected patients.
