The CHAMPS score proved highly effective in predicting mortality in patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding, showing an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.89. It significantly outperformed the Glasgow-Blatchford score (0.72) and AIM65 score (0.71). In low-risk categories, mortality and rebleeding rates were zero; however, 58.8% of patients in the low-risk group still required intervention. While robust for mortality prediction, the CHAMPS score did not reliably predict rebleeding or interventions.
• Why it matters: Accurate mortality risk assessment in gastrointestinal bleeding is crucial.
