Non-Curative ER for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Long-Term Outcomes and Recurrence Risk with Additional Chemoradiotherapy

Among 97 patients with non-curative endoscopic resection (ER) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), 73 underwent additional chemoradiotherapy (CRT). With a median follow-up of 71 months, recurrences were observed in 14% of patients. Lymphatic invasion was identified as an independent risk factor for recurrence. Notably, all patients who underwent surgery for recurrent disease survived, regardless of lymph node metastasis. The study findings suggest that careful follow-up for at least 5 years after ER with additional CRT is necessary for patients with non-curative ESCC.
