Male Sex and Roux-en-Y Reconstruction: Risk Factors for Abdominal Surgical Infectious Complications in Gastric Cancer Patients

Male sex and Roux-en-Y reconstruction were identified as independent risk factors for abdominal surgical infectious complications (ASIC) after distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer. A post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial (JCOG0912) found that male patients had a 2.364 times higher risk of developing ASIC, and those who underwent Roux-en-Y reconstruction had a 2.310 times higher risk, compared to Billroth I reconstruction. Surgeons should pay special attention to prevent ASIC in male patients and when Roux-en-Y reconstruction is chosen.
