A study involving 1511 major hepatectomies found that preoperative future liver remnant (FLR) volume assessment significantly impacts posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) risk. High-risk patients with FLR <30% faced a 32% incidence of PHLF, while low-risk patients showed lower rates at higher FLRs. The research underlines the necessity of volumetric analysis, particularly for those with factors like diabetes, cirrhosis, and specific cancers, as a 30% FLR threshold may be inadequate for preventing complications.
