Intraoperative nerve monitoring reduces recurrent laryngeal nerve injury

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 case-control studies involving 1,907 patients demonstrated that intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) significantly reduces recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (OR = 0.47, p < 0.001) during minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Additionally, IONM decreases the length of hospital stay and lowers the rates of postoperative lower respiratory tract infections. Findings support IONM's role in enhancing surgical outcomes without increasing operative risks, necessitating further investigation into long-term benefits.
