Automated Metrics for Assessing Surgical Residents’ Consultations

Using electronic health record data, a pilot study reveals that surgical residents performing consultations improve in speed but not in medication reconciliation as they gain experience.

  • 58 residents conducted over 19,000 consultations, with an average duration of 3.4 hours and 71% having medication reconciliation completed.
  • As residents gained experience, consultation duration decreased by 18%, along with a reduction in variation of their performance.

These findings suggest that automated EHR metrics can provide objective, scalable assessments of resident performance, but the effectiveness of this tool for enhancing medication practices requires further study.
