Rectal Prolapse Emergencies Carry Worse Outcomes

Emergency admissions made up over a fifth of rectal prolapse hospital stays nationally, and those patients fared worse.

  • Of 7,555 adults admitted with rectal prolapse, 1,681 (22.2%) came in as emergencies.
  • Emergency patients stayed longer, died more often in hospital, and were less likely to go home.
  • They were more often older, poorer, or living with dementia, psychiatric illness, or homelessness.

This was a look back at billing records, so it shows links, not cause and effect.
