Enhanced recovery after gastrointestinal lesion resection

An enhanced-recovery pathway after endoscopic removal of small upper gastrointestinal lesions shortened hospital stays without increasing complications.

  • The randomized trial enrolled patients with lesions no larger than 2 cm.
  • Complications were no more common; patients started eating around 33 hours after resection, versus 70 hours with usual care.
  • The pathway also lowered hospitalization costs.

This single-center trial involved selected patients with small lesions, so the results may not apply to larger or more complex resections.
