Anastomotic leakage following colorectal surgery poses a significant financial burden on hospitals and society, with costs varying widely between countries. Hospital readmissions, intensive care stays, and reinterventions are the main drivers of these incremental expenses. Despite the high economic impact, data on societal burden and non-medical costs are lacking. Adherence to international reporting standards is crucial to comprehend and validate the reported cost estimates accurately.
