Frailty Assessment Using Diagnostic Codes

Frailty, linked to adverse outcomes following minor stressors, was quantified effectively through an adapted Risk Analysis Index (RAI) using ICD-10-CM data. The RAI-ICD parameters showed good discrimination in hospitalized patients, allowing for classification into different frailty categories. Adverse outcomes rose with increasing frailty levels. The study highlights the RAI-ICD’s potential to enhance frailty assessment in adult inpatient care datasets, improving risk prediction and patient care.

Evaluation of Proximie Virtual Platform for Medical Student Education in ENT Surgery

Effect of Training Programs on Surgical Performance in Single-port Laparoscopic Surgery

Prognostic Value of Lymphocyte-to-C-Reactive Protein Ratio in Fournier’s Gangrene

Younger patients with low lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio had better survival rates in Fournier’s gangrene. Higher hospital costs correlate with increased mortality risk. The Fournier’s Gangrene Severity Index, lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio were effective at predicting patient outcomes. A low lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio was identified as a potential marker for assessing mortality and disease severity in patients with Fournier’s gangrene.

Relationship Between Cholecystitis and Sudden Death Risk Factors

Barthel Index Predicts Surgical Outcomes in Elderly Hepatectomy Patients

Barthel Index scores below 85 indicate higher risk for adverse surgical outcomes in elderly hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing hepatectomy. A retrospective cohort study of 497 patients found those with lower scores had significantly lower rates of achieving textbook outcomes (TO) post-surgery compared to higher score patients (29.3% vs. 72.1%). Assessment of functional decline using the Barthel Index can help identify high-risk patients and guide preoperative and postoperative care for better surgical outcomes.

Cost-effectiveness of Distal Pancreatectomy Techniques

Laparoscopic and robotic distal pancreatectomy are more cost-effective than open surgery, with laparoscopic surgery showing better cost savings and robotic surgery having superior surgical outcomes and improved quality-adjusted life years. Both laparoscopic and robotic approaches resulted in significantly reduced hospitalization costs compared to open surgery, showcasing a more favorable profile in terms of costs-morbidity, costs-mortality, costs-efficacy, and costs-utility.
