Age-based Prediction of Neoplastic Gallbladder Polyps Using Ultrasound Features

The prevalence of neoplastic polyps in gallbladder polyps increases with age. Linear scoring models based on ultrasound features effectively predicted neoplastic polyps in different age groups. Independent risk factors included number and size of polyps. The models outperformed using polyp size alone. This study provides valuable insights for tailored treatment strategies in patients with gallbladder polyps.

Factors influencing operative time for laparoscopic cholecystectomy by trainee surgeons

Operative time for laparoscopic cholecystectomy by trainee surgeons is affected by factors such as surgeon experience, patient characteristics, and certification. Male sex, higher BMI, and lack of endoscopic skill certification in attending surgeons were associated with longer operative times. Skilled attending surgeons can help reduce operative time and improve outcomes in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Outcomes of Liver Resection with Vascular Reconstruction

Study identifies risk factors for mortality & morbidity in liver resection with vascular reconstruction. Surgical mortality rate highest in hepatic artery reconstruction (15.8%). Factors include age, male sex, comorbidities, liver function, and biliary reconstruction. Portal venous reconstruction most common (59.6% of cases). Analysis provides insights for improving patient outcomes in hepatobiliary surgeries.

Impact of Cachexia Index on Prognosis After Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery

The study evaluated the prognostic impact of cachexia index on gastrointestinal cancer surgery outcomes, finding that a low cachexia index was associated with worse overall and progression-free survival. Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Reduces Risk of New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes

Metabolic bariatric surgery lowers the risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes in patients with obesity, with a more pronounced reduction in those of low socioeconomic status. In a cohort study with 917 patients and 1811 controls, new-onset type 2 diabetes was less frequent in the surgery group (4.1 per 1000 person-years) than in the control group (20.2 per 1000 person-years). The risk reduction was more marked in individuals of low socioeconomic status, indicating that access to bariatric surgery could help reduce health inequalities.

Impact of Social Support on Weight Loss After Bariatric Surgery

Exploring patient and provider perceptions of social support post-bariatric surgery, this study identified key themes influencing weight loss maintenance. Family involvement, partner/friend engagement, transportation assistance, and addressing life stressors are crucial for sustained weight loss outcomes. Providers play a vital role in reinforcing facilitators of social support and making appropriate referrals for patient success.

Improved Outcomes with Neoadjuvant Therapy in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

Patients with resectable or borderline resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation (total neoadjuvant therapy, TNT) or neoadjuvant chemotherapy only (NAC) had longer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) compared to those who underwent upfront surgery. In a study with 26 patients receiving TNT, 28 receiving NAC, and 168 undergoing upfront surgery, those in the neoadjuvant therapy groups had improved outcomes, suggesting a beneficial role for preoperative treatment in PDAC management.

Comparison of Purse-String vs Linear Suture for Skin Closure After Ileostomy Reversal

Comparison of purse-string technique vs linear suture for skin closure after ileostomy reversal showed a significantly lower incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) with the purse-string technique. Findings suggest purse string closure could be considered as the standard of care for wound closure after ileostomy reversal, with better cosmesis outcomes.

Impact of Elective General Surgical Procedures on Patient-Derived Scores

Patients undergoing common general surgical procedures experienced varying improvements in Impact on Life (IOL) scores post-operatively. Gallbladder surgery showed the greatest improvement, with consistent changes across ethnic groups. Pre-surgery IOL scores and the type of surgery were significant predictors of post-operative improvement. These findings support the inclusion of patient-derived IOL scores in prioritization tools for elective surgeries, alongside surgeon assessments.
